4/20/2017

Chapel Hill, NC (March 3rd, 2017) – The Dental Foundation of North Carolina received a $1,500 Smiles for Kids grant from the Delta Dental Foundation (DDF) to update training videos and information on  its Baby Oral Health Program (bOHP) website.

The updated information will reduce conflicting evidence on the oral health of this population. For example, emerging evidence provides new information regarding the transmission of bacteria from caregivers to children. The updates will also increase focus on the importance of preventative oral health. It is essential that dental professionals, and others who utilize the bOHP, have access to current materials while participating in the comprehensive program.

“We are grateful for Delta Dental’s support, which will enable us to update important videos and content on the bOHP website,” said UNC School of Dentistry Dean Scott De Rossi. “The website provides contemporary knowledge and measures that will improve oral health, overall health, and the health trajectory for infants and young children. bOHP is used by tens of thousands of dentists, physicians, and parents nationally and around the globe, and we thank Delta Dental for helping us share this information.”

The Delta Dental Foundation focuses on ensuring that children and adults in North Carolina receive high-quality oral health education and dental care. The grant received by the Dental Foundation of North Carolina is one of 21 grants totaling $45,000 that DDNC is donating to North Carolina oral health organizations and programs.  Grant recipients were selected based on criteria that included the number of at-risk children served, the uniqueness of the program, the level of community involvement in the program and the ability to measure results.

“Dental disease is the number one childhood disease, yet it’s preventable. Teaching parents how to maintain good oral health in their children from birth is critical to prevention,” said Curt Ladig, president and CEO of Delta Dental of North Carolina. “By providing support to the Dental Foundation of North Carolina for the important work that it does, we can help to ensure that crucial oral health information is kept current for all who benefit from their programs.”
