4/20/2017

Newland, NC (March 16th, 2017) – High Country Community Health (HCCH) received a $750 Smiles for Kids grant from the Delta Dental Foundation (DDF) to help complete an educational space that allows Avery County children to be bussed to the HCCH Avery Dental Office to learn about proper hygiene, brushing, and flossing techniques for lifelong oral health. Delta Dental of North Carolina awarded an additional $250 to further support the development of the space.

Avery County is one of the poorest and most underserved medical areas in the state of North Carolina. The county is ranked 99th out of the state’s 100 counties in access to clinical care. Since most families do not have dental insurance, HCCH is working to fill that gap. Children who visit the Avery Dental Office for educational purposes will also be sent home with information about HCCH and their affordable dental services.

“We are very grateful for the support from the Delta Dental Foundation and Delta Dental of North Carolina,” said HCCH Chief Operations Officer Bryan Belcher. “We look forward to the completion of the Avery Dental Office educational space so that we can provide important dental education to the children and community members of Avery County.”

The Delta Dental Foundation focuses on ensuring children and adults in North Carolina receive premiere oral health education and high-quality dental care. The grant received by HCCH is one of 21 grants totaling $45,000 awarded in 2016 to North Carolina oral health organizations and programs. This is the second year that HCCH has been awarded a Smiles for Kids grant. Grant recipients were selected based on criteria that included the number of at-risk children served, the uniqueness of the program, the level of community involvement and the ability to measure results.

“We are pleased that the Delta Dental Foundation is providing funding to High Country Community Health,” said Curt Ladig, president and CEO of Delta Dental of North Carolina. “We know that the counties HCCH serves are lower ranked when it comes to access to dentists. Supporting this organization can help ensure that more children are educated about the importance of good oral health and receive the care they need to grow up healthy and be successful.”
